Division of Modern Greek Language and Literature
About the Division
The Division of Modern Greek Language and Literature is a part of the Department of Balkan Languages and Literatures of Trakya University. There are 4 Faculty members, 1 Instructor and 4 Researchers in the Division of Modern Greek Language and Literature. Students can register to the undergraduate program every year since the 2007-2008 academic year. The quota of the undergraduate program has been determined as 41 students for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Students who successfully complete the undergraduate program of Modern Greek Language and Literature can express themselves about current issues both verbally and in writing. They can define the Greek language, mythology, literature, history and development of Greek culture and folklore scientifically, they can make verbal and written translation, they can read and comprehend a text in Greek, likewise, they can analyze the mutual cultural relations and their effects in the Turkish and Balkan geography. With these achievements, there are many business opportunities for students who have successfully completed the undergraduate program. Especially when considering that Greece and the Republic of Turkey are neighboring countries, in various commercial and cultural activities, both domestic and abroad translatorship and expertise are leading fields.
On the other hand, our students can continue their education in the universities of Greece which have bilateral agreements with our university within the scope of Erasmus for 1 or 2 semesters. In order to be able to study abroad with Erasmus Program, it is required to have a minimum GPA of 2.20 and to be successful in the foreign language exam conducted by Erasmus Coordinator. Our department as part of our university has an agreement with 4 universities in Greece. These universities are; National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (3 undergraduate students quota), University of Thessaly (4 undergraduate students quota), University of Ioannina (4 undergraduate students quota) and Democritos University of Thrace (2 undergraduate and 1 graduate students quota). The agreements and the number of quotas with the relevant universities are valid until 2021. About 25 students of our department have benefited from the Erasmus program until today.
In addition, up to the present 2 Greek academicians visited our university and organized seminars within the scope of Erasmus Program.
Dr. Apostolos Benatsis from the University of Ioannina organized a 15-hour seminar on the subject of “Theory of Literature and Modern Greek Literature” between the dates of 17-23 April 2011.
Dr. Aleksandra Galani from the University of Ioannina organized a 12-hour seminar on the subject of “Second Language Teaching: Greek as a Foreign Language” between the dates of 18-22 April 2016.
Mission
The mission of the Modern Greek Language and Literature Programme is to teach the Modern Greek language in the context of four basic language skills, and to gain the competence to examine and evaluate the history, literary genres, literary and scientific texts of Modern Greek literature and to raise well-equipped individuals who are aware of professional ethics and responsibility, have the knowledge to access information and conduct scientific research in the field, are sensitive to the environment and have social responsibility.
Vision
Our vision is to become an academic department that is prominent and preferred with its academic staff who have proven their scientific and academic competence in the field of Modern Greek Language and Literature, and educates qualified students who respect ethical values.
Programme Aims and Outcomes
To provide our students with sufficient, up-to-date and qualified knowledge and language proficiency in the field of Modern Greek Language and Literature, and to enable them to use the theoretical and applied knowledge and skills they have acquired in the fields such as linguistics, foreign language teaching, Modern Greek Literature criticism and translation,
To enable students to explore the works of Modern Greek Literature in a chronological integrity in social, cultural, historical and theoretical contexts; to provide students with the literary and linguistic theories, approaches and methods necessary to comprehend, analyze and interpret works, as well as critical and creative perspectives,
To help students comprehend and analyze the nature of the Modern Greek language and the different elements that make up the language through related disciplines such as linguistics, phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology,
To equip students with the necessary theories, techniques and skills to translate texts from Modern Greek to Turkish, from Turkish to Modern Greek at different levels, fields and disciplines,
To develop professional ethics, social responsibility and environmental awareness in students,
To develop the knowledge, scientific research methods and skills necessary for the students to continue their careers and education in their own field and in disciplines close to the field.
